Soccer Saturday

Yep...today was K's season finale for fall soccer. She played a solid game today with a corner kick that resulted in a goal and made a few great saves at goalie. After the game, we had the traditional pizza party where she was recognized for last week's game where she had 4 goals in one half.

Besides that, it's been a pretty busy day...

  1. Emptied/Loaded Dishwasher
  2. Made new pitcher of formula for M
  3. Got all of the laundry done
  4. Changed the cat's (Z's) litter box
  5. Made a Target run for various and sundry things
  6. Mailed a bunch of stuff at the UPS Store
  7. Grabbed lunch at The Honey Baked Ham Company
  8. Voted (since I'll be in West Virginia on Tuesday)
  9. Bought printer ink, paper and a couple new CDs (Jack Johnson's "Brushfire Tales" & John Mayer's "Heavier Things") at Best Buy. (I also went to buy the Fraggle Rock DVD that was advertised in last Sunday's paper, but they were out.)
  10. Did I mention laundry???
  11. Applied for the sales job with my current company
  12. Picked up a few pumpkins with the kids at the nearby "pumpkin patch"
What did YOU do today???

Not A Good Sign

I think I mentioned that November is National Novel Writing Month.

I've signed up to participate this year, but seeing as how I can't even manage to write in my own blog for nearly a week, I don't have high hopes that I'll actually cross the finish line with a completed novel in 30 days.

Work's been crazy this week and I just found out today that I have to go to Charleston, WV on Monday. Granted, I'll be back on Tuesday night, but it still sucks having to leave on short notice like that.

Also next week, I finally have my phone interview (this is #3) with the President of the company in Arizona that I'm trying to get the job with. Keep your fingers crossed.

At the same time, I'll also be applying for another sales job with my current company.

While I'd love the challenge of starting with a new company, if I were to get a chance to accept both, I'd probably stay where I am. Despite all of the perks they've taken away from us, I still get a fairly good amount of vacation and I wouldn't have to deal with all of the new stuff that goes with starting with a new company.

I have no idea if I have a realistic chance at either of those, but I'm sure tryin'!

Let's see...what else?

Oh yeah! My fantasy football team is really SUCKING right now! It seems like all of my best players are hurt dammit!

I'm also WAY behind on my blog-reading, but I'll try to catch up sometime over the weekend.

Alright...I really don't have anything else to add, so I'll stop it here.

Have a great weekend all and a fun and safe Halloween!!!

Weekend Update

A series of unrelated and somewhat random thoughts on a beautiful fall Saturday afternoon...

  • First things first...Go Red Sox! Even though I live next door to the Cardinals home state, I'm really pulling for the Sox...if anyone's fans deserve to win the Series, they do.
  • In football news...if I'd have started writing this earlier, I'd have been commenting about how pleased I am with my Jayhawks efforts against Oklahoma today. We were only down 4 at halftime, but now we're down by 18. Oh well...I didn't have very high expectations for today anyway.
  • Does anyone else hate paying a shitload of bills on a Saturday as much as I do?
  • Watched "The Punisher" last night. Pretty entertaining film...way unrealistic, but fun (and a little gross) nonetheless.
  • That leaves "Hellboy" as the unwatched DVD I have on hand from Blockbuster's Freedom Pass (or whatever the hell they call their program without late fees). Hopefully, I'll watch that today.
  • I'm not using that program way enough...I need to cancel it.
  • Baby M has had a cold most of the week...it really sucks.
  • I went to Buffalo this week...it took me 11 hours to get there on Monday and another 9 to get back on Tuesday night/Wednesday morning at 1 a.m.
  • My favorite band, Jackopierce, played here in KC last Saturday night, but I missed it. I'm really hoping they come back again soon.
  • We've got two soccer games this weekend...3:45 today and 3:45 tomorrow.
  • I just finished off what was left of our package of Halloween Oreos.
  • My office is a complete disaster after the bill-paying exercise this morning.
  • We actually got some of those computer rebate checks back this week...yay!

OK...I'm done with the bullet points.

One final thing I'd like to share with you. Many of you know this and some may not, but November is National Novel Writing Month (aka NaNoWriMo). What is NaNoWriMo? It's an exercise designed to get all of those people out there who have ever thought about wanting to write a novel to actually sit down and do it.

The goal is to write, from scratch, a 50,000 word novel (around 175 pages). It's all about quantity and zero about quality...the group that organizes this just wants people to dedicate time to writing on a regular basis.

I remember when I first heard about it in the middle of last November and I decided I wanted to do it this year. Obviously, I didn't know at the time that I'd have a newborn baby, but you know what? Who cares?! I'm going to give it a try anyway.

If you've ever thought about it, you should too.

I'll be sure to keep you posted on my progress.

Have a great weekend all!

And, again, GO RED SOX!!!

I NEED PANTS!!!

OK...I thought that might get your attention.

I wish I could take credit for the above quote. I suppose, in a way, I can take credit since it came from the strong lungs of my 4-year-old daughter L repeatedly after I took her out of her bath the other night.

She and her twin brother J were taking a bath together and they were finally wrinkly little prunes when I made them get out. It's usually a pretty straight forward event.

I lift one out and wrap a towel around them and then pull out the other and give them a towel.

That night, it was J's turn to get dried off and dressed first and L seemed to be fine with it.

Until she started screaming, "I NEED PANTS!!! I NEED PANTS!!! I NEED PANTS!!!"

I kid you not...she must have repeated that phrase about 45 times.

Finally, after time #10 or 12, I couldn't help it but just start laughing hysterically and then J started laughing too.

It was just so uncharacteristic of her...she's usually the quiet one. And she wasn't screaming in an upset way...she was TRYING to be funny...and it worked!

I'm not used to my 4-year-old having such a sense of humor.

I'll write about the first part of my week a little later. I've been meaning to write about this for a day or two and I'm just now getting around to it.

By the way...

GO SOX!!!!

MIA

Hi all...sorry I've been missing in action this week. I was in training all week at our local Courtyard with the rest of my team. The first two days were absolutely phenomenal and the rest of the week was a necessary evil in my eyes.

But, I managed to survive and so did K, despite having extended duty with the kids all week...only 3 weeks after her C-Section. I'm so thankful for all of the work she puts in...especially knowing she's still trying to recover.

Unfortunately, it doesn't get any easier this week as I head to Buffalo tomorrow and won't return until late Tuesday night. To try and make up for it, I'm going to try to take all of the overnight feedings tonight for M.

What else?

Today's Sunday, which means it's Fantasy Football time again! My team is 4-1 right now thanks to some fortunate scheduling in my favor...last week I played a guy who had both Priest Holmes and Donovan McNabb, but they were both on a bye. Lucky me!

This week, I'm facing the injury bug as many of my starting receivers are banged up. I won't be surprised if I lose my second game of the season. Either way, it'll be good fodder for my friend Don (who I'm going up against) the next time we get together for lunch.

Last night, K and I got a babysitter for all the kids and headed out to a dinner party that was catered by one of my favorite cajun restaurants, Jazz. Man, that food was awesome!

At that party, me and my friend Jim managed to hold court on the pool table for six straight games, so that was pretty fun as well.

Right now, I'm down in my office trying to get ready for this trip to Buffalo and I also found out Friday that I was supposed to have my final presentation ready for a seminar I'm giving this Wednesday. Oops! It should've been done last Wednesday, so I sent an e-mail apology to the coordinator along with my bio that she also was supposed to have. I've promised her that the presentation will be sitting in her e-mail inbox on Monday morning.

I've got most of the presentation done, but I still need to do some fine tuning.

As for the rest of the day, I need to mow the back yard and take J out with me so we can get haircuts together.

And, I've promised J that we'll watch the Chiefs game together. This is the first time he's ever shown any interest in watching football, so we'll see how long it actually lasts.

That's all I've got for now.

Hopefully, tonight, I'll be able to get caught up on the blogs of my Blogroll.

Have a great Sunday everyone!

Until Next Time...

Write On!

Remember that entry about having to write an essay for work?

Well...I'm pleased to report that I did win a prize for having the best one.

In fact, the trainer even asked if I'd be interested in contributing to their sales newsletter.

Pretty cool, I think anyway!

Right now I'm just watching Monday Night Football and getting ready to feed M.

Gotta go!

I Hate My Car

I know that's got to be bad karma and everything, but I'm so tired of this car, it's not even funny.

My car's been in the shop essentially since M was born more than two weeks ago. I had it for a week or so, but wasn't driving it much.

Basically, I've had a bad oil leak that I tried having fixed once earlier this year, but whatever they did, didn't fix it. So, when my alternator went out the day before M was born, they fixed the alternator and put some kind of dye into my engine so they could figure out where the oil leak was coming from, but I had to drive it for a while to get the dye to come out.

I finally took my car back in on Monday and they told me it was the intake manifold that needed to be replaced. (I have no idea what that is, but I just nod my head and go along.) So tonight, after paying $560, I hopped in my car, eager to find out if my driveway would be free of new oil stains.

One minor problem...when I started the car, my "Service Engine Soon" light came on. Of course, this is after K had left with the kids, thinking all was ok.

So, I walk back in to the shop and explain the problem and they essentially tell me there's nothing they can do about it tonight and I should go ahead and drive it home and bring it back on Monday (which I can't do because I have training all freaking week). But, being the nice guy I am, I said ok and got back in the car to head home.

Time for problem # 2! After I back out of the parking space, I start to drive away as I realize something mildy important...my spedometer's not working!!! "I swear officer, my spedometer I was going 0!"

I walk BACK to the shop and tell them this, so now I have two mechanics out there looking at my car and neither one can figure out why this would be the case and they explain that the computer's locked up for the weekend. Again, they urge me to drive it home and bring it back on Monday and they'll figure it out.

At this point, I'm obviously not very happy with the situation as I get back into the car to drive (carefully) home.

But wait! There's more!

Just as I get ready to drive away, I'm looking out over the hood of my car and realize that steam and/or smoke is slowly coming out from somewhere inside.

So I get out of the car AGAIN to go back into the shop AGAIN!!! One of the guys takes a look at it and seems to think it's just leftover antifreeze still sitting on the engine after they refilled it after they did the work in that intake manifold. (Glad they were so cautious as they refilled my antifreeze.)

So I FINALLY get back on the road and then, miraculously, the spedometer starts working! Although, it still doesn't work right away when you start going. Then, the "Service Engine" light went off....but then it came back on again.

And THEN...I decided to turn on the air conditioner because I was a little warm and despite having the upper vents button pressed, only my feet were getting air. Not good. One more thing for them to take a look at.

Now, if this were any other business, believe me, I'd be naming them publicly right here for the whole world to read. The thing is, this garage is owned by the friend of a friend and I'd like to give them the chance to make it right.

So far, all of the attempts to fix the oil leak have cost me around $1,000 and that's just since January. Add on the water pump and alternator and I've spent nearly $1,800 just this year.

Did I mention that I drive a 92 Olds Cutlass Supreme that has a book value of about $1,000???

I WANT A NEW CAR DAMMIT!!!

(Breathing deeply...relax...ohmmmm....)

OK...that's all of my ranting for the evening (so far anyway).

I hope your day's been better than mine.

Please Turn In Your Blue Books

It's been a few years since I was in college and had to write an essay. (OK...ok...more like 11 years...shut up.)

So today, I had an essay due for work prior to all-week training that starts on Monday.

Now, being a journalism major, I like to think that I do fairly well with the written word. I can get pretty wordy at times and sometimes get a little excessive with the vocabulary and stuff. This was pretty apparent as I reviewed my essay before submitting it at the end of class...I mean the day. But all in all, I think I did alright.

There will be several people, including bosses and at least one peer, that will be reading my submission. I was the kid who always wanted to beat everyone when it came to test scores...it's where my competitiveness comes out the most. From what I've heard, we'll actually be graded on these. I'm hoping that I kick everyone else's ass. And if I don't, you'll never know anyway.

Right now, I'm trying to get a very fussy M to calm down. She's not due for another bottle until 11:30 CT. I'll be happy if we can get to 11.

Congrats to the Red Sox on the big win today and advancing to the ALCS.

Anyway...that's all I got.

Entries may be few and far between next week with all that training going on.

Have a good weekend!

Mid-Week Musings

OK...musings might be too strong a word, but I feel bad for not having updated in a while. It's a combination of being busy with getting back to work and the new addition to our family.

Or maybe it's just because I don't feel like screwing around with Blogger which inevitably fails when I try to post something. Oh well.

Anyway...got back into work yesterday and ended up working on something until 3 this morning. I'm a little tired tonight, but still too dumb to go to bed early.

Today was more of the same, although I took a few breaks to run the kids to different places since K isn't cleared to drive just yet.

We did take M out for her first restaurant dinner tonight at my favorite Mexican place, Dos Reales. As usual, the Burrito Bravo was superb (and I have enough leftover for lunch tomorrow).

Other than that, I just got back from buying what I hope is a winning Powerball ticket for tonight's $177 million drawing. Yeah...I think I could eke out a living on that.

Right now, I'm pulling for the Twins to beat the Yankees and waiting to see what the Red Sox can do in Game 2 against the Angels.

How's your week going so far?

La Famiglia Update

Just lost another whole goddamned post!!!

Anyway...even with that, all is well here in Play By Play Land. K got taken off of bedrest and M's pediatrician says her gunky eye is probably a blocked tear duct and not pinkeye like the Urgent Care Center doc said.

A big thanks go to both my parents who came up when K first went into the hospital and came back again this weekend while she was on bedrest. Mom finally went home tonight, but she was a great help as she took on the role of chef, chauffeur, babysitter, maid and launderer (clothes, not money). It's been great. Also thanks to K's folks for coming up while K was in the hospital and doing much of the same.

Because of doctor appointments today, I postponed my return to work until tomorrow...that makes 7-1/2 straight days away from work. I can get used to this! (Just need to win that $170 million Powerball lottery on Wednesday night.)

Thanks also to all of you out there that have left such positive comments about M's arrival. It's great knowing you're out there and support me.

On that note, I have some other blogs to catch up on.

Until Next Time...

Is This Thing On???

Hi all...I tried posting the same thing about 30 times yesterday and it never worked, so I'm hoping this does.

If you can read this, a slightly lengthier post is forthcoming.

Sunday Update (Take 35)

GRRRR!!!!

I'd just finished this whole entry and it disappeared when I tried to publish it. I hate it when that happens!

Anyway...the gist of what I'd said was, M's right eye is getting all kinds of gunk in it and is swollen, so I'll be spending this morning at the Urgent Care Center at the local children's hospital. Should be fun.

At first, we thought it was just sleep in her eye, but it kept coming back all day yesterday and this morning it was matted shut. I'm hoping it's just a blocked tear duct and not something like pinkeye or worse.

Other than that, today should be a good day as my parents are up here helping us out and my brother and sister are coming over for Sunday dinner (at noon).

Speaking of that, does anyone else call a big mid-day meal "dinner"? My wife, K, insists that it's always lunch and the only dinner is what you have in the evening.

What say you on this oh-so-important topic?

Baby M Update

Hi all...looks like this Sunday will be spent at the Urgent Care Center with little M.

Yesterday morning, she started getting what looked like sleep or matter in her eye. We cleaned it out and didn't think much of it.

Unfortunately, it didn't stop and she's woken up several times with her right eye matted shut and now it's swollen as well.

I think it might be just a blocked tear duct and am hoping it's not pinkeye or anything worse.

Fortunately, the local children's hospital has an urgent care center that is open 24 hours on the weekend, so I'll be heading that way shortly.

I hope your Sunday's a little better than mine!

(On the plus side, my parents are here and my brother and sister are coming over for Sunday dinner, so that should be nice.)

That actually raises another question...is there anyone else out there who calls the Sunday midday meal "dinner"? Or is just us? K, my wife, insists that it's still lunch. My family always called it dinner when we all have a nice sit-down full-blown meal (as opposed to sandwiches or mac & cheese or something simple like that).

Just wondering.

Damned Digital Media!

OK...so I'm all happy about the arrival of little M who is now 8 days old (and sitting right next to me with the hiccups as I blog this).

I'd mentioned to all of you how I'd planned on uploading some pictures of little M as soon as I got around to downloading them from my camera.

Well...therein lies the problem.

It seems that the digital memory card got corrupted and almost all of the pictures that we'd taken after the delivery are inaccessible.

So now I'm faced with sending the card off to a data recovery company in Florida (who I will happily give a free plug to if they can get those pics back to me). It costs $75 and if it were just everyday pictures, I wouldn't worry about it. But these are the first pics of M with her siblings, grandparents, aunt and uncles, etc. It'll be well worth the $75 if they can get them back to me.

Keep your fingers crossed!

Other than that, I'm just real tired. K's still on bedrest (and not doing a very good job at it) and M, of course, needs to be fed during the night. I was originally going to take just this week off, but I'm starting to think this time off might extend into next week as well.

this weekend has two soccer games for K, including one tomorrow morning at 9:15 when it should be nice and chilly...the overnight tonight is supposed to be 39. Yippee!

What's on your plate for the weekend?

(And by the way, if you see a typo where something should be uppercase, it's not my fault...the shift key doesn't seem to be working right all the time...I try to catch most of them, but hey...nobody's perfect.)
