Soccer Saturday

Three soccer games and a birthday party have ruled our Saturday today.

Oldest daughter K has her first soccer tournament this weekend, including one game last night, two games today and another game at 8:00 tomorrow morning.

On top of that, boy J had a soccer game this afternoon at the same time as K's second game of the day.

I ended up going to K's game while my wife went to J's game. By all accounts, J did well in his game and I'm happy to say that K scored a goal in her game to help her team win 3-2...their first win of the tournament.

This is especially cool because K's team is the lowest ranked team in this tournament and they weren't expected to win any.

The score was tied 1-1 when K got the ball around midfield and dribbled all the way down and shot it right past the goalie as soon as she entered the goalie box...it was awesome.

Our whole sideline cheered and I felt really great for her.

Now, I don't expect such miracles at the 8 a.m. game tomorrow. The team we beat played our opponent for tomorrow earlier in the day today and lost 13-0. Yeah...they're pretty good.

I'll be thrilled if we can just score one goal and avoid a shutout.

And tonight was the family birthday party for little M.

A very busy, but very fun day for everybody.

Hope all of you are having a great weekend as well!

Until Next Time...

Happy 1st Birthday, M!

Since it's now officially September 23, I'd like to be the first to wish my baby girl a happy first birthday!

I can't believe it's been a whole year, but on the other hand it seems like forever ago that we were in the delivery room waiting for her arrival.

Happy Birthday, M!

College Football

Just wanted to give huge congratulations to the LSU Tigers on a phenomenal, hard-fought victory against Arizona State University today.

They kept showing live shots of students watching the "home" game in Tempe, AZ from LSU's real home at LSU Stadium and these guys were just going nuts.

The people in Louisiana certainly deserve any chance they get to smile these days. Tonight's game was one of those chances.

Now, I've never been a huge college football fan, but I found myself watching or listening to quite a bit today.

I got to watch the end of the K-State/Marshall game and neither team deserved to win this game, but somehow K-State managed to pull it out. I'll try to give the Cliff's Notes version of the final 70 seconds or so.

With a 2-point lead and the ball, K-State needed to a) run off the clock and b) score a field goal at least. With 1:03 to go, they had 3rd and Goal from the 22 or something ridiculous like that. Their option was to run a running play and let 30 seconds run off the clock and then kick a mid-range field goal. What do they do? They decide to call a pass play which could've easily resulted in a quick stoppage of the clock and more time for Marshall to come back. They managed to complete the pass, but instead of falling to the ground, the idiot receiver fumbled the ball (Marshall's D gets some credit) and Marshall recovered. Now, there's still a minute left AND now Marshall only needs a field goal to win. So a few big plays later and they're down to the K-State 20 with 8 seconds on the clock and no timeouts.

In this situation, I say kick the damn field goal...but NOOOOOOO...the idiots call a pass play. (What's with these coaches???)

And, of course, K-State managed to intercept it and impressively managed to run the final 4 seconds off the clock for the victory on the road.

It was just damn painful to watch.

Other games I watched or at least paid attention to were Notre Dame's victory over Michigan at Michigan...second big victory to start the season and the Fighting Irish are looking like a real force again. Iowa State beat #8 Iowa and Texas held on to beat Ohio State.

Another thing I noticed from watching far too much ESPN...former Notre Dame and South Carolina Coach Lou Holtz looks like he's been taking his happy pills. I swear the guy looks stoned...actually he talks like the happy painter guy that used to be on PBS...you know...the white guy with the big afro? I'd give you a link, but I'm too lazy.

That's all I've got for tonight.

Until Next Time...
